The Outdoor Life
The outdoor program is the name of our game. Without it the game does not work. Scouting without an outing is in the same league as swimming without water.
Any personal belongings (e.g. radio's, CD players, electronic equipment, ) are not allowed on a camp-out. There is no reason for scouts to carry money other than the week summer-camp trip. The scouts are responsible for their own personal cash. Remember, as the parent, your common sense prevails when providing your son with cash for any BSA event.
Scouting is effective whenever we take advantage of this truth: The place where Scouting works best is also the place where boys want most. The outdoors.
Why is the outdoor program so special? There are a number of good reasons. Here are four that are especially good:
- The outdoors is the best place for learning outdoor skills. How could it be otherwise? A Scout who tried to boil a potato on the gym floor would be in hot water for sure - not to mention the boy who tried learning to swim by reading a book.
- The outdoors is also a great place for learning something about living with others. When Scouts walk the same trail, cook and eat together and share triumphs and troubles together, they're going to find out important things about, say, patience, respect for other points of view, doing their full share, and making a friend more easily. Skills like these are among the "personal growth" skills we want for every Scout. And the outdoors is where they grow best.
- On the trail or in camp, boy leaders will be challenged by the real thing - getting their patrols fed and sheltered, keeping them warm and safe, solving the problems they can't solve, and knowing how to get help for those they can't. It is a time when leadership skills deepen, patrols grow closer, and the Troop grows stronger.
- The outdoors is also the place where a Scout can come close to the natural worlds around him - the land, forests and wildlife, the lakes and rivers, the mountains and seas. Here, outdoors, he will learn of the "land-ethic" - the understanding and respect for the environment.
